Aythamy Armas
Lustro
This September marks the opening of Aythamy Armas’ first solo exhibition at the Palau de Casavells, closing the cycle of exhibitions of the season in the countryside gallery of Alzueta Gallery.
Lustro celebrates five years of artistic collaboration with the Canarian artist. The title not only refers to the five-year period we are commemorating but also evokes sheen and the act of polishing ( ́lustrar ́ in Spanish: to polish, to care for, to appreciate, to love). In this sense, the exhibition offers an intimate and reflective journey through the works created during this period, exploring the technical, aesthetic, and conceptual concepts that have nurtured his artistic evolution.
Born in the Canary Islands, his passion and sensitivity for art emerged at an early age. Memories of childhood, doodling in his free time, continue in his memory. His work is personal and intriguing; in front of it, the viewer is not invited to contemplate a determined idea, but rather a landscape, a topography of the artist himself. Bodily movements captured on bare surfaces, untreated cotton, or white paper resemble calligraphies trying to tell a story, to describe a map of a place that can be entered and inhabited. It is through the act of creation that Aythamy connects with his essence, and it is by means of his works that we can connect with Aythamy.
A tribute to his masters: rhythm, sound, line, texture, and landscape are the cornerstones in the conception and development of his work. These elements have appeared after an evolution that began years ago when his graphics evolved from soft gradients to the current prominence of the line. Not only do they describe formal aspects of the pieces, but also articulate the underlying discourse of his work. Whether by repeating patterns or combining materials, each work connects to its sister in an inevitable rhythmic exercise, playing with the firmness or softness of each intervention. This variation in tone and texture enriches the spectator’s experiential expectancy of the canvases, making skillful use of minimal materials.
Throughout these five years, Aythamy has cultivated a deep entanglement with his work, marked by the revision, evaluation, and meticulous care of each piece. This exhibition is a small veneration of that creative process and the ideas that have guided it. Each work presented in Lustro is a manifestation of the dedication and passion that Aythamy Armas has invested in his oeuvre, inviting the viewer to immerse themselves in a sensory and conceptual journey through his artistic trajectory, reviewing all those concepts that have forged and molded who he is today.
