Embodying Colors
“I conquer, however little it may be, a piece of color; I enter a little into that color. Do you realize what a joy that can be? And that is to fulfill a power.
Gilles Deleuze
Embodying Colors is the result of a profound research on color carried out by artist Xènia Fuentes. Through this project, Fuentes explores different ways of understanding and expressing color, seeking to capture not only its visual beauty, but also the emotion and satisfaction that come from a total immersion in it. Through her photographs, she invites the viewer to experience color in a personal and sensorial way.
The series is composed of four colors that we can contemplate in monochromatic photographs of white, red, black and blue, with the purpose of deepening its symbolic, formal and sensory aspects. This work goes beyond the aesthetic; it is a vital experience that transforms both the images and Xènia Fuentes herself, who is influenced by color at every moment.
As is usual in her work, Fuentes uses the medium of the self-portrait in a restricted way, always hiding her face with fabric or gestures, making the portrait somehow incomplete. The body takes center stage, defying the typical stillness of photography to explore new bodily forms. The artist is particularly interested in how the body can be transformed, mutating through the movement of the cloth until it appears as a living sculpture, constructed by the textile.
Movement is her main tool for creating visual effects with color, and fabrics are the medium with which she generates a chromatic dance that produces patterns and shapes. These are not only influenced by the movement of the body, but also by the way the color is distributed and mixed in space. The interaction with the fabrics allows a direct connection with color, which becomes an extension of her bodily expression, communicating emotions and moods.
To intensify this exploration of color and movement, Xènia Fuentes designed a series of garments specifically for the project, with the aim of generating shapes, volumes and patches of different colors. These garments are inspired by pioneers of contemporary dance such as Martha Graham and Loïe Fuller, as well as characters from silent films, such as Musidora in Les Vampires.
With this exhibition the artist takes us to her colorful and sensorial universe, once again. But where normally the chromatic contrast between background and portrait stands out, on this occasion Fuentes gives herself completely to one color, inviting the viewer to be absorbed by it, to experience it and feel its range of tonalities.
