Maru Quiñonero

De Mica en Mica

Maru Quiñonero (Murcia, 1979) returns to blue tones in this new body of work on canvas in which she reviews her repertoire of a color that has a lot of meaning for her, being a constant in her career. In this new series where the canvas, as a medium, plays the main role, Maru uses colors that maybe remind her of the sky of Madrid both at dawn and at sunset, a sky that she enjoys during daily walks with her dogs through the city or the sea of her childhood in Almería. It seems like a kind of a rainbow of blues filled with other colors. Because as she says: “life is full of blues”, and all of them make up a new chromatic universe that is displayed throughout these 15 never revealed works. Beyond the velvety texture of the strokes of usual pencil-on-paper works of Maru, this time, she faces the canvas working with acrylic paint and pencil. Thus, a growth can be seen in the material use of paint that works little by little, de mica en mica, layer by layer of color until achieving a surface full of nuances, full of deep sense. Surfaces delimited with pencil echoes that return us to the familiarity of Quiñonero. Trying to make the viewer complete with their gaze all the colors that are in the background of each figure. Far from searching for a meaning and avoiding a certain impartiality, Maru wants to simplify her work and its reading. On the one hand, focusing on aesthetic value and the pursuit of beauty, for the pure pleasure of creating it. On the other hand, from each composition, returning again and again to forms that we already recognize in her work but that beyond repetition she works on as an exercise of insistence that pursues more certainty. Finally she also does it choosing each title, this time searching through the books, movies or songs that have accompanied Maru in recent months, making it clear that she wants her works to also be impregnated with that artist-work dual intimacy that is breathed in her studio. With this, a rhythm and an increasingly joyful, but no less honest, a declaration of intentions, can be seen in which Maru feels comfortable and in which she continues to grow from the most immediate simplicity and sincerity. Once again, Maru Quiñonero develops this new exercise in sensitive abstraction as she likes to refer to her work, achieving almost a mirage of colors and shapes that always speak of herself and her truth.

“Reivindico el espejismo
De intentar ser uno mismo
Ese viaje hacia la nada
Que consiste en la certeza
De encontrar en tu mirada La belleza”
