This Is How We Look, Is This Who We Are?
Photography has a paradoxical relationship with reality: it captures it more directly than painting, yet it also allows for the creative construction of images with artistic and critical intent. This is evident in Alzueta Gallery’s first group photography exhibition, which explores how we perceive ourselves and others.
The featured artists use portraiture and self-portraiture to challenge stereotypes and present identity as fluid and ever-changing. Through light, costume and artistic manipulation, they construct new narratives, questioning fixed roles and embracing complexity.
Here, photography becomes a mirror of possibilities, dissolving outdated labels and inviting viewers to imagine new ways of being. Each work transforms the act of looking into a space for discovery.
Evelyn Bencicova, Rala Choi, Camila Falquez, Amy Friend, Xènia Fuentes, Carlota Guerrero, Sarah Moon, Bettina Rheims, Trine Søndergaard, Maria Svarbova, Andrea Torres Balaguer and Bastiaan Woudt place identity at the heart of their research, using themes such as emotional connections, technology, architecture, gender, female empowerment and the connection between past and present as lenses through which to look.
Through a variety of visual languages, these artists address the question of identity in contemporary society, a central theme in modern art photography. The exhibition deliberately leaves the question open, inviting viewers to imagine possible answers
