Our Debut at NADA Miami 2024
We’re thrilled to announce Alzueta Gallery’s debut at NADA Miami 2024, running from December 3rd to 7th. This milestone marks a significant moment for us as we join one of the art world’s most dynamic and forward-thinking events. At our booth, we’ll be presenting a carefully curated selection of works by two remarkable artists: Nina Silverberg and Sune Christiansen.
Founded in 2002, the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) is a not-for-profit collective that champions contemporary art through collaboration, accessibility, and innovation. Its annual Miami fair is a cornerstone event, showcasing emerging artists, curators, and galleries from around the globe, while creating an inclusive space for exploration and dialogue.
Our presentation at NADA explores the delicate interplay between reality and dreams, inspired by Julio Cortázar’s «La noche boca arriba»—a story that questions the veil between the real and the surreal. Through this lens, we invite visitors to reflect on the nature of perception and the spaces we inhabit to escape contemporary realities.
In 1955, Julio Cortázar published «La noche boca arriba» a short story that arises from the impetus of the Argentine writer to dip his feet into one of the questions that most tormented, aka inspired, artists throughout his time: the veil that separates reality from dreams.
In a hospital bed, the protagonist of the story wakes up disoriented, and it is on this bed where the color, thickness, and even the smell of the aforementioned veil are questioned.
Understanding the raison d’être behind the work of the artists, it is through this story, as an excuse, that we propose a reflection to the visitors of NADA about the visual connection in our booth between the nature of reality and the fragility of human perception. A real-time
narration of a dreamlike state. Nina, on one hand, is responsible for providing the inner reality of escaping into our interior as a defense mechanism, while Sune, on the other hand,
represents the daydream, the colors, the almost surreal organic shapes.
The booth is a technically virtual realm brought into reality, a demonstration of how and where we escape from the contemporary reality that surrounds us. For better or for worse, how we seek refuge and escape from our surroundings, whether out of fear of being
overwhelmed or out of avoidance of the feeling of alienation or displacement. The feeling of being trapped between different realities and disconnected from one’s own echoes in the work of both artists.
NADA is Cortázar’s hospital bed, where anything can happen. Outside, beyond the glass windows, nothing matters. Or it does, but as a selfish and desperate way of seeking comfort, we will pretend it doesn’t, and keep embracing colorful dancing human-like figureens.
Nina Silverberg is an Italian painter living and working in London. She received her BA in Fine Art from City and Guilds of London Art School in 2018.
Silverberg’s paintings are marked by their quiet energy, muted palette and often small scale. Characterised by both a solitary stillness and an implied intimacy, she hones in on everyday objects – from books to furniture – to examine ideas of isolation, sickness and the relationship between interior and exterior worlds.
Sune Christiansen on the other hand, Born in Denmark, completed his MA in graphic design and animation from
The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts – Architecture, Design, Conservation. Before taking up painting, he had been working as an art director and animator at The Danish National Broadcasting Company.
Sune is a magician. With a very limited base of elements, he builds a world full of explosions, surprises, unexpected twists and turns. It is fireworks, an impossible chain of events that lead
us from the blank canvas to a colorful composition that on the one hand points to reality, and on the other to the most absolute abstraction.
