About
Lives and works in Barcelona, Spain
Trained in illustration and engraving, Berni Puig began his career as a
muralist with works such as Omnipresente (2020) and La Manzana (2020),
which are based on the aerial view of the intervened area, assigning a
different colour to each fragment of land according to its use, resulting in a
singular mosaic that tells the story of how its inhabitants have intervened the
space and the landscape over the years.
Puig’s desire to experiment with the medium led him to gradually abandon the
wall and the two-dimensional plane. Thus, in Plein Air (2021), he employs the
technique of anaformism, using the optical effect to deform the image so that
it must be viewed from a specific angle and perspective, giving it a sculptural
dimension.
In recent years, the artist has chosen to combine outdoor and studio work in a
renewed desire to catalogue the involuntary memory recorded by architecture
and ruin, this time using the strappo technique. Traditionally associated with
the extraction of Romanesque frescoes, Puig updates this method when he
applies it to the removal of the domestic paint and graffiti that cover the walls
of factories and abandoned houses in the textile colonies of the Llobregat river
basin.
Shunning representation to construct a particular system of signs, the artist’s
work reorders and rescues the most intimate and precarious aspects of
painting, offering a space for human inconstancy.
