Eloy Arribas
El Palau
At Barcelona Sèneca, we are delighted to present El Palau by Eloy Arribas, a series of artworks produced during his residency in Baix Empordà.
This series of paintings is created using a unique technique: drawings are produced through the strappo method, where surfaces of paint are extracted from a single wax mold that is continuously modified with each drawing. This technique establishes a bidirectional genealogy between the various drawings, ensuring that at any point, it is possible to trace the position of each piece within the whole, and identify its immediate predecessors and successors. Much like in a palace with an infilata di stanze (a suite of rooms), where one cannot access the next room without passing through the previous, this method embodies a physical conception of time: it takes as long as you travel, and the room (or drawing) can be taken as the unit of measurement.
Since the previous drawing is not erased from the wax mold, traces of earlier works remain, partially fading as the series (and journey) progresses. In this way, and with the depiction of essential figures (plants, architecture, figure etc.) as a premise, the accumulation of marks and residues gradually abstracts the original figuration, engaging in a subtle play of obfuscation and concealment.
