Francisco Mendes Moreira
Coimbra, Portugal, 1979
About
Lives and works in Algés, Portugal
Initially, Moreira’s practice is a way of solving problems that builds on an intuitive work process which can be triggered by contemporary culture, daily routine and other circumstances, letting them determine the approach and the final result. Working primarily on repurposed surfaces the artist’s works are done with different techniques, such as oil paint, oil pastels, wood, collage or papier-mâché, trying to make the most of what is at hand.
His images have an immediacy often shifting between representative elements and abstract patterns. The different mediums and surfaces, number of themes and even the scale of his works are all circumstantial, in the sense that it is his day-to-day living that determines his studio processes. Analysis has little space in the specific creative process, but looking at the artists oeuvre, one can conclude that Moreira’s practice is an ongoing commentary and staging of events related to the human condition.
